Please take your seat.

Thank you.

May I have your name please?

My name is ........ .

Where are you from?

I’m from ........ .

How did you come here?

I came here by bus and it took 4 hours.

Oh, 4 hours. You must be tired. Be relaxed and let’s enjoy conversation.

(深呼吸)OK.

Could you tell us about yourself.

(早速質問に入ると思いこんでいたので焦りながら)My name is ........ , and I am teaching English at a high school. My hobby is playing tennis and in spare time I am teaching Japanese to foreigners working at a factory. It is so fun.

OK. So please tell me why you want to be a tour guide?

When I was a university student, I was given a chance to study in Australia for a year. During summer and winter holidays, I participated in many local tours and met many nice, warm-hearted tour guides. Thanks to them, I enjoyed my trip and learned a lot about the historical background of the sites. Now I am in Japan and I want to introduce Japan and Japanese cultures to foreigners in return. I want to support foreign tourists enjoy their stay in Japan.

OK. So now suppose I am a tourist and you are a tour guide. Please teach me about Japan.

For the first time?

Yeah, I know nothing about Japan. I want to go skiing in Japan. I’ve heard that many Australians go to Hokkaido for skiing. Do you know more about this? Which resort?

It is Niseko Ski resort. As you said, many Australians visit Niseko and enjoy skiing. Some Australians even buy houses there.

Oh, really?

Yes. And there are so many foreigners that there are many restaurants and shops where you can speak English. Niseko is famous for its nice powdery snow, so you can enjoy skiing as well as snowboarding there.

Please take your seat.

Thrding there.

Oh, I see. How about near here? Do you have any ski resorts?

Yes, we have. We have a nice ski resort in Hiroshima.

What is the name of the resort?

mmm.. I forgot the name of the resort.. maybe “Akiho” or something……(本当はミズホでした。 But the public transportation is not so convenient.

But are there any buses?

Yes, there is a bus service from Hiroshima Station. It takes about 2-3 hours.(この辺も行ったことないのでかなり適当です)So if you have time, I recommend you go to Hokkaido. It’s much better.

How about in Kyushu?

mmmmmm… Yamaguchi is very close to Hiroshima. So when I go skiing, I rather go Hiroshima. I don’t know much about Kyushu ski resort.

Oh, OK.(そういえば九州出身じゃなかったと思い出した様子で)

OK, samurai is very famous worldwide, right? I’ve heard that Samurai always carry two swards. Why did they have two? Was one not enough?

(突然の話題転換にとまどいながら)Samurai warriors used his swords to fight against their enemies. I’ve heard that the swords at that time were easy to be broken especially after they cut the flesh. So I think they had two swords to protect themselves… just in case one of them was broken.(本当はbladeやthin などの単語を使って刃こぼれの話などもしたかったが、焦ってうまく説明できなかった。

Oh, OK. It’s interesting and it makes sense.

OK. There are many foreigners who influenced a lot to Japanese history. Who do you think of?

I think Professor Clerk influenced a lot to young Japanese people in Hokkaido.

Professor Clerk?

Yes, after the Meiji Restoration. Japanese government invited many foreign engineers and technicians to modernize Japan. He taught many young Japanese at Hokkaido University. He said “Boys, be ambitious” and this expression gave young Japanese courage. As for the Meiji Restoration, the commodore Perry is also important.

Yes, the commodore Perry. Do you have questions?

You are from Yamaguchi prefecture. Who do you think was most influential in the history of Yamaguchi?

mmm…. I don’t know whether this is the correct pronunciation of his name in English but ザビエル was very important figure. He introduced Christianity to Japan.

頷く

I’ve heard that Yamaguchi is the place where Japanese people started to cerebrate Christmas in Japan. There is a very beautiful church dedicated for him.

OK. That’s all. Thank you for coming all the way here.

Thank you, nice talking with you.
