B : May I have your name and address?

My name is .... I live in Yawata, in Kyoto Prefecture.

A : Why don't Japanese husbands praise their wives?

This is because being modest is a virtue among Japanese people. Therefore, being modest is very important for Japanese. If they praise their wives too much, other people would consider that person arrogant.

(今から思えば、セミナー等で練習した「愚妻」のことを言うべきだった。)

A : How about at home? Don't they praise their wives at home?

The wife is the most powerful person in the family. Therefore, they may praise their wives at home.

A : OK. I often see old people walking outside. Why is this?

On television, it is often said that walking is good for health. Young people don't walk very often. Only older people walk outside, because older people worry about their health more than young people.

A : Older generations are more conscious of their health?

Yes.

A : What is "higan"? What do people do at "higan"?

(「300選」を思い出そうとしたが、"vernal"が出てこなかった。)

"Higan" is the equinox days. There are two "higan"s. One is in spring, and other is in autumn. Buddhist temples hold special services. And people pay their respects at their ancestors' graves. So people pay respects to their ancestors during "higan".

A : What is "kotatsu"?

"Kotatsu" is a device to get warm. I don't like "kotatsu", because it looks old-fashioned. I don't have a "kotatsu" at my house. It takes up a lot of place.

("space"と言うべきだった。)

"kotatsu" is a kind of table. There is a heater inside. We sit around the table and put out legs inside the table. It is a good way to create a friendly atmosphere.

(自分は嫌だと言ったのに、矛盾する答えになってしまった。でも、突っ込まれることはなかった。)

A : That's all, thank you.

Thank you very much.
