A, B： Good afternoon
B： What’s your name?
My name is ….
B： Where did you come from?
I came from Nishinomiya, Hyogo Prefecture.
A： I will ask you some questions about Japan. Why are Japanese so interested in foreign countries?
Because Japan was isolated from the rest of the world for over 200 years in the Edo period. So Japanese people are interested in foreign things. I also have a lot of interest in foreign countries. I have visited France four times. When I was a university student, I majored in French.
A： Oh, did you learn French? But this is an English test! Why?
I started learning English when I was three years old.
A： Three years old? Really?
Yes. My grandfather worked as a manager in a British company in Japan for a long time, and I saw him speaking with foreigners many times, so I started learning English.
A： So were you forced to learn English?
No, I wasn’t forced to do so by my parents. I only wanted to become like my grandfather. I was interested in being able to speak English.
A： OK, next question. What do you think about sending the Self-Defense Forces to Iraq?
I think it’s not a good idea. Our prime minister says it is important for us to work as a member of the international community. But maybe terrorists think Japanese only help America. I think it’s very dangerous. Many terrorist attacks such as the train bomb in London have happened.
A： But the Japanese Self-Defense Forces are building a water supply system in Iraq, aren’t they? It is for the Iraqi people, isn’t it?
Yes, of course it is helpful for the Iraqi people. But terrorists don’t understand it. So I think it is dangerous.
A： OK, next question. What do you think about foreigners coming to Japan to take care of the elderly people?
I think it’s a good idea. For us Japanese as well, it is a good idea to take care of elderly people, because they have contributed to our society for a long time. We should respect them. So it is also a great thing for foreigners to take care of them, too.
A： OK, time is up. Thank you for coming.
B： Thank you.
I was happy to be here. Thank you.
