Good afternoon.

B: Hello. Put your bag and coat on the chair, and please sit down.

Yes.

B: Please tell us your name.

My name is ….

B: Where are you from?

I’m from …-cho in Nara Prefecture.

A: …-cho?

It is located near the border between Osaka and Nara Prefectures.

A: Oh, I like Nara very much. OK, I’m going to ask you some questions. Let’s suppose I’m a foreign tourist who has just arrived at Kansai International Airport. Where would you take me first from there?

Well, I would take you to Osaka Castle first.

A: Why?

Because it is an elaborately constructed structure. The castle has a long history. It was built hundreds of years ago by the warrior named Toyotomi Hideyoshi. And there are many trees with blossoms in its garden. So many tourists visit there.

A: Oh, that makes me want to visit Osaka Castle. By the way, there is an NHK building near Osaka Castle. What do you think about NHK?

(全く予想していなかった質問。何と答えてよいかわからない。ある職員の番組制作費の不適切な使用が頭をよぎる。)
Well, NHK is managed half-publicly. So, they should be more careful about the way the money is being used. They should take some serious measures, such as auditing, to prevent such incidents as those reported on TV. In fact, NHK does make many good programs for children and adults. So, I hope they will reorganize their system soon, and keep making good programs for us.

A: OK, next. Please tell me the difference between shrines and temples.

There are many shrines and temples in Japan. Shrines are places where Shinto gods are enshrined. In the precincts of a Shinto shrine, there are a red-painted torii, that is, a gateway to a shrine, and a pair of stone guardian dogs called komainu. Temples are Buddhist temples. In temples, there are Buddhist statues, artifacts, and beautiful architecture. Some temples and shrines are very popular. Many tourists visit there.
(的を射ない、まとまりのない答えになってしまった。)

A: OK. That’s it for today. Your English is excellent. I enjoyed the conversation.

Thank you for interviewing me. Good-bye, and thank you.

(あとで思い出すと、幼稚でまとまりのない内容の答えになっていることがわかり、ああ言えばよかった、こう言えば良かったと思うことばかりです。英語が正確ではない部分がたくさんあると思います。)
