B:(ドアを開けるなり)Good morning.

Good morning.

B: Please put your bag on the chair.(ショルダーバッグを持っていた。入って左に荷物置きのイスがあった。)

Thank you.(置いてから、試験官の方に向き直った。)

B: Please come forward, and take that seat, please.

Thank you.

B: May I have your name, please?

Yes. My name is ….(Bがうなずいて手元のメモを確認)

B: Where do you come from?

I come from …-city, Osaka.

A: Oh, we have many people coming from Osaka this morning. Do you know some of them?

Unfortunately, no.

A: Oh, that’s too bad. OK, I’ll ask you some questions. Do you think Japanese culture has been influenced by Western culture?

I think, in some aspects, Japanese culture has been affected by Western culture. For example, clothing is one aspect. We rarely wear kimono … but in other aspects Japanese culture hasn’t been changed much, I think. Japan’s traditional theatrical arts like kabuki or bunraku have not changed….

A: Do you think many Japanese people still see Kabuki?

I think the number of people who enjoy kabuki is much smaller than in old times, like the Edo Period. But nowadays many kabuki actors appear on TV, and the number of people who enjoy kabuki is increasing.

A: Oh, I didn’t know that. Do those kabuki actors become TV actors after they retire from kabuki?

Not really. Most of them keep pursuing their careers as kabuki actors….

A: OK, next. What do you think about the raising of consumption tax?

Personally, I don’t agree to the idea, because I want to buy many things. But, considering the present situations concerning our social security system, I think it would be OK for us to bear a little more burden on our part, in order to support our children or next generation.

A: To what percentage will the consumption tax rise? Do you know?

I’m not sure, but I’ve heard that Prime Minister Koizumi is thinking of raising it to 7%.

A: Yes, 7%. I think so. OK, next question. When you wear kimono, you wear obi, I understand. What is the purpose of wearing obi?

Well, kimono doesn’t have any bottoms or zippers on it. So, you have to wear a sash called obi, when you wear kimono.

A: Obi is a broad sash, and it looks pretty heavy and uncomfortable to wear. Why is it so broad?

Yes, I felt the same way…. I don’t wear kimono, but one of my friends like wearing kimono. She often wears kimono. She tells me that a broad sash makes us feel relaxed especially on our back.(表現に自信がなかったので、イスを回転して背中を手で示した。だが、回答自体が意味不明だったせいか、サラッと受け流され、追加の質問などはなかった。)

A: OK, we have run out of time. Thank you very much.

Thank you for your time.
(3人に微笑んで退室した。私の前の受験者の時は大きな笑い声が聞こえていたが、私の面接では終始フレンドリーだったものの、爆笑することはなかった。)
