Japanese people are known for their syncretism toward religion.
We have two religions, Buddhism and Shintoism. Shintoism is our
indigenous religion. Temples belong to Buddhism and shrines belong

On TV, I often see people in Western countries getting into a hot
spring in their swimsuit. But in Japan, you are expected to take
off all your clothes.
B: OK. What are the weather like in Okinawa and Hokkaido?
In Okinawa we have lots of hot days and in Hokkaido we have cold
days with lots of snow. They are on the extreme end.
B: OK. How did Japan modernize the country after the Meiji Restoration?
We were in seclusion before the Meiji Restoration for more than
250 years. After the Meiji Restoration, we imported new ideas and
technologies from Western countries. We wanted to build an industrial
B: Japan has three writing systems. What are they?
First we have kanji characters. We imported kanji characters from
China, and later we deformed them, and we invented two writing systems:
hiragana and katakana. Katakana is used for borrowed words.
