B: Hello.(にこにこしていた)

A: Please have a seat, and use that chair for your bag.

Thank you very much.

Thank you.

B: Please tell me your name, and the place you live.(とてもゆっくりとはっきりと)

My name is ....... and I live in Suginami ward in Tokyo.

A: So, you don't live in Nakano?

No, but I'm often asked about that. It is confusing.

A: I live in Kawasaki, so I'm not sure whether Nakano is a ward. Is Nakano a ward?(Bに尋ねる)

B: Oh yes, it is.

A: OK. And my name is ……

Nice to see you.

A: Now, I am going to ask you a few questions about Japan and Japanese culture.

Oh, yes please.

A: Well, Japan is famous for a long life. Why do you think is that?

(少し時間を置いて)
Well, I think one of the reasons is the diet of Japanese people. Traditionally we eat a lot of fish, rice, vegetables, and we don't take too much oil. But I know it's changing these days, but still I believe it is one of the reasons for a long life in Japan.
(もっと話して、という感じだったので)
Another reason can be advancement of medicine in Japan.
A: Do you mean hospitals?

Yes, equipment and doctors, etc.

A: Oh, yes.

B: うんうんとうなずく。

I believe that helps to live longer.

A: There are actually many old people at hospitals.(笑い)

I also think, traditionally Japanese people respect older people, probably it's changing, too, but still, many people try to take good care of older people, so I assume it helps , mentally, older people to live longer.

B: うんうんとうなづいていた

A: OK, now the next question. Electronic dictionary is getting very popular nowadays. What do you think about this?

As one of the users, I think it's very useful. I don't see any big disadvantage. Well, but when I used a book dictionary, I looked up a certain word and tried to read other words and sentences on the same page whereas when I use an electronic dictionary, I just check the word and the meaning . But still I think it is very useful. Many of those include not only J-E, E-J dictionaries, but also Japanese dictionary and encyclopedia, so when I want to check a certain Chinese character, I can use the same dictionary.

A: OK, so it is convenient.

Oh, yes, it is.

A: But it's expensive, isn't it?
Well, but I think it's getting less expensive and if you think about buying all those dictionaries, it shouldn't be expensive.

A: OK, well when I checked my electronic dictionary I happened to see the word, "Bunkasai". What is it?

Oh, it's literally translated 'cultural festival'. It's held especially at junior or senior high schools and universities and colleges during autumn seasons. Some schools hold it in spring, though. At the festival, some students play drama at school theater, others play instruments, and they would have food stands, etc. It's a school festival but not only students of the school, but anyone who is interested in it can go.

A: Oh, I see. Well, I'm afraid we're running out of time.
B: Yes, it's short, and thank you.
Thank you very much.
A: By the way, the door is very heavy.
Oh, thank you. I'll push it hard and thank you very much.
A,B: Thank you.
