B,A : Good afternoon.

Good afternoon.

B : Please take a seat.

Thank you.

B : May I have your name, please?

My name is ....

Ms. ..., where are you from?

I'm from Yotsukaido in Chiba.

B : Were you born in Chiba?

No, I was born in Sakura. Excuse me, yes, I was born in Sakura in
Chiba Prefecture. So I was born in Chiba.

(落ち着きがなかった。)

A : First, let me ask you this question. How would you explain "ema" to
foreign tourists?

"Ema" is a tablet which bears a picture of f horse.

A : A horse?

People buy them at shrines and temples. They write their wishes and
offer them to a shrine or temple in the hope that their dreams will
come true.

B : Do you write your wish on a tablet too?

Yes, I often do that. I have so many dreams.

(元気よく答えた。)

A : How do you feel about the 100-yen shops that are popular among
foreign tourists in Japan?

Excuse me, could you repeat your question?

(質問の頭の部分を忘れてしまったので。)

A : Yes. How do you feel about the 100-yen shops that are popular among
foreign tourists in Japan?

I can understand them, because a variety of good such as CDs,
cassettes, and ... daily necessities are sold at such shops. I often
go to 100-yen shops. They're like the 99-cent shops in the United
States.

A : Have you ever been to the United States?

No, I haven't, but I've heard that there are such shops in the United
States, too.

(後になって、ここでもう少し話しを膨らませておけばよかった、と思った。)

A : Why do you think Japanese are reserved?

I think that's because, in Japan, being modest is regarded as a virtue.
People try to show their modesty by respecting other people's
opinions, so they appear to be very shy or reserved. They think
harmony with other people is very important.

B : You said "harmony"?

Yes.

B : Do you think it's disadvantageous for Japanese businessmen who don't
express their opinions to conduct business overseas?

Yes, but these days, more and more business people go overseas and
acquire foreign business manners, so they have come to express
themselves more openly than before.

B : OK, thank you very much. That's all.

A : Have a nice day.

Thank you very much.
