Good afternoon.

A: Please put your bag and umbrella on the chair.

Thank you.

A: Please sit down.

Thank you.

A: May I have your name?

My name is XXX YYY

A: Mr. Shimoda, Shimoda-san. Where do you live?

I live in Machida city.

A: Tokyo?

Yes. About 1 hour from here. It’s a residential area, so-called bedroom community.

B: Machida… , I know it. It is conveniently located.

Yes, We can go to Shinjyuku by Odakyu line, and to Yokohama by Yokohama line. But a little bit far from the center of Tokyo. It takes almost 1 hour.

B: OK. My name is ZZZ WWW. I will ask you some Japanese things? OK?

OK.

B: Why don’t Japanese husbands do things with their wives?

You mean… do something with the wife?

B: Yes, do something with their wives.

Because, Japanese men think working hard is a good thing and don’t take care of their wives or their families. They devote themselves to their work. We don’t do much household chores and left them to their husbands, no … wives. But recently, young people tend to go home early and spend their time with their families.

B: Do Japanese husbands say to their colleagues ”my wife cooks well” or something like that?

No, Japanese people are modest and don’t say much about their wives and families to their colleagues.

B: In summer, some festivals are held in Japan. What is Tanabata?

Tanabata is a star festival from China. Two stars, Vega and Altair meet only once a year on July 7th. They are separated by the Milky Way for the rest of the year. It’s a romantic story.

B: What do you do?

In Japan, we decorate bamboo trees and display them, put tags and write our memories and things like that.

B: What do you think about teaching English to small children?

I think it is a good idea to teach younger children. As I myself have difficulty in pronouncing the "l" and "r", because we started learning English in junior high school, I think that if they start earlier, then, their pronunciation would be good.

B: But it is difficult for public schools.

Yes, but as far as I know, some public schools started to teach English at elementary school as well as private schools.

B: So, you agree to teach English earlier?

Yes.

B: Well, we have finished all the questions prepared for you.

Oh really, I feel it’s very short.

(え?もう終わり?という感じでした。こんな短いinterviewで判断されるなんて。)

B: Yes, that right. Thank you.

Thank you.
