B: Please take a seat.

Thank you.

A: First, Please tell us your name and where you live.

My name is・・・. I live in Koto-ku, near Sumida River.

B: Thank you for coming today. Today I will ask you some questions about Japan and Japanese people. Frist, I want to ask you about the earthquake in Japan. Recently, there was a big earthquake in Niigata. What kind of preparation is being made for possible earthquake in Tokyo area?

Both national and local government prepare for the earthquake, because there is a great possibility of earthquake indicated by the scholars. Recently I read the newspaper by the local government indicating where we should go to evacuate when earthquake occurs. And it also said that the local government stores some food, water, blanket and some other things in several storages around us.

B: Where do you think is safe, when the earthquake happens in Tokyo area?

I think, I am not sure, but I think the area around the Imperial Palace is safe.
B:Oh, maybe.(笑) Then where is the worst place, dangerous place?

The worst place, well・・・

B:How about subways?

Oh It’s very dangerous. And I think seashore is dangerous, too.

B:Seashore?

Yes, because seashore might be liquidated, when the earthquake happens.(流動化現象のことを言いたかったのですがこれでは通じなかった)The ground will shake heavily there.

B:Then I will ask you next question. The earthquake is one thing which exists in Japan and not in my country, and there is one thing which exists in my country and not in Japan - street crime.
Why do you think Japan is so safe. Even at night, it is very safe on the street.

Yes, there are several reasons for it.(犯罪に走るほど困窮している人が少ないのだ、と言おうと思ったが・・・)Mainly because it is due to economic problem.(あ、でもそれじゃあなたの国は貧しいと言ってしまうことになる・・・と焦って)I don’t know much about your country, but regarding Japan, most Japanese think that they are in middle-class, and don’t want to risk their living by committing crimes.

B:Well, they feel they are involved in the society・・・(というようなことを言ったと思うけれど定かではない。)Then does the police work here well?

Yes, very well.

B:Do you think the number of crimes is increasing or decreasing?

Well, according to the news, it is increasing.

B:Why do you think it is increasing?

Well・・・there are increasing number of younger people who don’t work and have much time to think of crimes.

B:Ok, that’s all for you. Thank you for coming today.

Thank you,(あ、違うよ)You are welcome.
