Good morning.

B : Thank you for coming.

My pleasure.

B :May we have your name?

My name is....

B : Could you tell us where you live?

I live in Minato Ward, in Tokyo.

B : Thank you.

A : Mr. Kawaguchi, thank you very much for coming this morning. What
is unique about Japan and Japanese.

(まったく予測していない質問だったので、動揺したが、パニックになってはいけないと考え、思いつくままに以下のようなことを話した。最初は動揺して
いたが話しているうちに落ち着くことができた。)
Japan and Japanese is unique from the rest of the world because it is
an island nation and Japanese people have for more than 2000 years live
independently from other countries. Never invaded or occupied, except
soon after the World War II occupied by the US forces. Other than
this, Japan has no such experience. So I think this is one of the most
unique portion of the Japanese history. And also Japanese are very
uniform, in other words, homogeneous. People are all very similar and
have same ideas and life-style. That’s one of the unique part of
Japanese.

A : Can I ask about the island nation? Do you think there are common links
between Great Britain and Japan?

(島国ということから英国が出てきたと思うが、日本と英国が島国であっても何か共通点があるのか全く考えつかなかったので、これも思いつくままに答えた。)

Ah, Great Britain and Japan. Probably, similar mentality. Island
nations’people have similar mentaliy. But British people went overseas
so often, and Japanese people didn’t so often. Especially Japan closed
the country during the Edo period. So Japanese people are less
aggressive than British people.

A : Uh-huh. How do you feel about non-Japanese sumo wrestlers becoming
Yokozuna?

I appreciate non-Japanese sumo wrestlers’efforts. I think many
non-Japanese sumo wrestlers had very severe experiences before becoming
higher ranking wrestlers. Japanese society is sometimes very closed.
Such foreign people who entered the sumo world should have
experienced very uncomfortable and very severe situation. Even so they
trained themselves very hard and became grand champions etc. I really
appreciate their efforts.

A : Are you interested in Sumo yourself?

Yes, I am interested in sumo.

A : Do you have a sumo wrestler you really like?

(最近はあまり相撲を見ていなかったので困った。)

Recently since there is no really strong Japanese sumo wrestler and I
am very disappointed about the situation. So I hope a Japanese sumo
wrestler will become a Grand Champion.

A : How would you describe Japanese working style?

I feel comfortable with Japanese working style because I am employed
by a company and expected to work there until retirement. But
recently such Japanese working style has been changing. So, we need
to train ourselves to be able to move to another company or a different
job.

A : Many foreign people think the Japanese work too long. How do you
feel about that?

Because of the lifetime employment system, Japanese workers should
show their loyalty to their companies. That’s why we should work so
long. But recently the situation has been changing and many young people
don’t work so long and leave office soon.

A : Thank you very much.

B, C : Thank you very much.

A : Thank you very much for coming today.

Thank you very much.

(荷物を持って出がけにもう一度振り向いてお辞儀をし、退出した。)

(アイコンタクトはできたと思うが、こちらが質問に一方的に答えるだけで、あまり会話になっていなかったのが不安です。)
