A,B : Good afternoon.

Good afternoon.

B : Please put your bag there...and take a seat.

Thank you.

(荷物を横に置き、着席。)

B : Please relax.

Sure.

A : What is your name and where did you come from?

My name is.... I came from Kagoshima.

A : Did you come here today?

Not really. I came to Tokyo yesterday.

A : I have never been to Kagoshima. So, could you explain about Kagoshima
including its tourist spots?

Kagoshima has a variety of tourist interests. For example, I live in the
capital of Kagoshima Prefecture. But, in front of the city, there is a huge
volcano which is active. With a hight of 1,776 meters, it erupts frequently,
and we sometimes suffer from heavy ashfalls. However, the volcanic activity
has been something low for the past several years, and it is a good time for
you to visit there. I really recommend you to visit there.

A : What is the name of the mountain?

It is called "Sakurajima" in Japanese, but I think it is easy for you to
remember because it literally means "cherry blossom island" in English.

Does Kagoshima have any particular things different from other areas?

Well, Kagoshima has a lot of different things, but if I say the most
conspicuous one, it would be the Kagoshima dialect. The Kagoshima dialect is
so unique that it is very easy for people who live in other areas to
identify people from Kagoshima. For example, I used to live in Tokyo for
about two years, people living in Tokyo always knew my origin all the time.
Actually, it was almost impossible for me to change my pronunciation.

What do they enjoy in the evening?

In the case of male office workers, they often drink after work. People in
Kagashima usually drink "Shochu", a distilled alcohol beverage, sometimes at
downtown areas in Kagoshima. There are many bars and nightclubs there. In
the case of female workers, they enjoy some entertainment in the center of
Kagoshima. There are several movie theaters there. Although there are a
variety of interesting things for visitors, sometimes things are somewhat
boring to people who live there.

A : What is the role of "chojyo", or the eldest daughter, in Japan?

As you know, the seniority system has been prevalent particularly in
Japanese companies. However, the seniority system still remains in Japanese
homes, too. When there are boys in a family, they will grow and marry women
in the future. But, when siblings are all daughters, there is a problem. In
Japan, family line is still considered very important. The parents want one
of their daughters to marry a man in the future to maintain their family
line. Most of the cases, the eldest daughter has this responsibility. This
is one of the differences between Japan and western countries in terms of an
eldest daughter's responsibility.

A : Thank you. That's all.

Is that all? Thank you very much.
