B : Good afternoon(微笑)

Good afternoon.

A : Please put your belongings on the chair if you would like.

Thank you.

A : Please have a seat.

Thank you.

B : Please tell us your name and address.

I live in ○○ city, Fukushima Prefecture.

B : Oh, then did you get up early to come here? It's a long way. Thank you for coming all the way.

It took me two hours. Thank you for having me here today.

B : Did you take the Shinkansen?

Yes, I took the bullet train.

A : It's a long way.

It is not too bad, though.

A : We are going to ask you several questions.

Yes.

A : What is "onsen hotel"?

"Onsen hotel" is a hot-spring inn which usually offers breakfast and supper. Also, it has hot springs sometimes with an outside bath. It is so relaxing to take a bath outside.

B : Is the outside bath a public bath?

Well, it is divided into two parts, that is, one for men and the other for women. And the guests can enjoy the hot bath without worrying about being seen by somebody from outside.(公衆浴場か?

A : What kind of food do they serve?

They serve special regional food. If the inn is located near the sea, they'll serve the guests fresh seafood such as sashimi, which is thinly sliced raw fish. If the inn is located in mountains, they'll serve you mountain vegetables.

A : Is it possible that the hotel owners grow such mountain vegetables to serve for the guests?

Well, I'm not sure. But if the hotel is a small one, the owner may grow vegetables and pick them to serve for dinner.

A : Would you explain tea-ceremony to foreign people who have never seen it?

Tea-ceremony is the … art and ritual of serving special powdered tea. It originated in the monasteries of Zen Buddhism. But today it is performed as an artistic discipline for the cultivation of inner-self.

B : Have you tried it?

Yes. When I was first employed by a company, I belonged to a tea ceremony club. I enjoyed making tea, as well as having tea with Japanese sweets.

A : What are Japanese sweets like?

Well, they are usually round-shaped. The size is this big, and sometimes it's in the shape of a flower. They are nicely made.

B : Why is tea ceremony so popular today?

It is popular…because while making tea, one's inner-self is trained and we can concentrate. It is good to practice elegant manners and graceful behavior.

B : What makes you want to be a tour guide?

I'd like to be a tour guide because I'd like to introduce Japanese culture and Japan's beautiful places to foreign people. When I was staying in Canada about 10 years ago, many people I met there asked me various questions about Japan, such as Japanese social systems and culture. At that time, I could not give them proper answers. I was embarrassed to realize how little I knew about my own country. That was when I made up my mind to learn more about Japanese culture. I hope to introduce Japanese culture and beautiful nature to people from various backgrounds.

A : What do you think of the idea of having a female emperor in Japan?

Well, it's a tough question, but I think it's time that the Imperial Law should be changed. The position has long been dominated by men, but Crown Prince and Princess have their daughter Aiko. So it is a good idea if an Empress succeeds to the throne. It would encourage many women to advance more and to do their best in the society.

A : So, you support the idea?

Yes, I do.

A, B : That's all. Thank you.

Thank you very much.

A : I enjoyed talking with you.

Good-bye.
