A : Please put your bag over there.

A : Please tell us your name and where you live.

My name is .... Actually I live in Osaka, but my husband lives here in Tokyo, so every weekend I come here.

B : Oh, so you will see your husband after this?

Of course yes! He is waiting for me.

B : OK. First question. I've heard that Japanese people don't remember many "kanji" these days. Is it true? If so, why?

It might be true. Nowadays, we have very useful tools such as PCs, oh personal computers, e-dictionaries and so on. So we don't need to remember all the "kanji" characters. You see, there are more than 6,000 Chinese characters, so people rarely remember them all. With such machines, we can write "kanji" characters without any difficulty.

B : I see.

Oh, but if I can't remember a "kanji" that everyone knows, I feel embarrassed.

B : OK. The next question is more difficult, I mean, it's related to politics, but ... don't worry.

I'll try to ...

B : You come to Tokyo every week, so you don't have a child, do you?

No, I don't.

I've heard about it, too. These days women can choose their own lives, I mean they can choose whether to have children or not. But it is also true that a woman who has a child can't work like a woman who doesn't have one. Some mothers live far away from their hometowns, so in such cases the women can't expect any help from their mothers, and so they often give up their careers. Then the income of a family with a child is lower than the income of a couple without children. So I think it's OK.

A&B : It's OK????

Yes. Women can choose their own lives. A woman who doesn't choose to have children chooses a dream that other women have given up.

B : OK, excellent.

B : What is Golden Week, and why is it called that name?

Yes, we Japanese enjoy short holidays, a week at most, in winter, summer, and in March, oh no, in May. The one in May is called Golden Week. During that week we have some national holidays, so if we take a few extra days off, we can have an entire week off. It's a beautiful season. The cold winter has gone, and the sun begins to shine brightly, so we feel very happy, it's a golden feeling!!

B : Do Japanese do anything unique during that week?

Oh yes, traveling. I think some travel abroad, and some enjoy domestic traveling. But everywhere is crowded with people, so some don't go so far. The season is really good for outdoor activities. Therefore, the mountain areas are also popular. I usually go hiking with my husband to mountainous areas near Tokyo.

B : Thank you for coming today.

A : Thank you.

Thank you. I enjoyed talking to you.
