A,B,C : Hello.

Hello.

B : Please sit down.

Thank you.

B : Please tell us your name.

My name is ….

B : Where are you from?

I’m from Suwa City, in the central part of Nagano Prefecture.

A : I heard that Nagano has already had some snowfall. Is that right?

Not in the part of Nagano where I live. Maybe the northern part of
Nagano has had some snow, but not in the central part.

A : Now, I’m going to ask you some questions.

Yes.

A : What do you think about the pension system in Japan?

I think it is facing a crisis. More and more young people are losing
faith in the system. Even though prime minister Koizumi is now making
reforms, he hasn’t explained the situation well enough, and has even
given us false information at times. People can’t trust such reforms.
So I think in the future, the system might collapse.

(“I think it is facing a crisis”

A : Do you think young people should …(聞き取れなかった)

I beg your pardon?

A : Do you think young people should worry about the system? I mean,
they might not receive money when they get old.

I suppose they should be worried. They might have to save money
themselves in case the system fails.

A : Are you yourself worried?

Yes. But to tell you the truth, now I am temporarily unemployed. So I
have to think about the present rather than the future.

A : Next question. What is undo-kai?

Undo-kai is a sports event held mainly in elementary schools in autumn.
School children compete with one another in various sports. Parents
cheer them … and have a specially prepared picnic lunch with their
children. It is an enjoyable event, both for children and their
parents.

C : Is school the only place where undo-kai is held? Isn’t undo-kai
held by other organizations, such as local communities?

In big cities like Tokyo, maybe undo-kai can be held not only by
schools but also by neighborhood communities. But in rural places like
my hometown, undo-kai isn’t usually held by neighborhood communities.
It is ordinarily considered a school event.

A : Can you tell us what kind of sports events are held in an undo-kai?

Uhhh …

They are mostly original types of sports. For example, rope-pulling,
ball-throwing … into baskets place in high positions, big-ball-sending
… over the heads of children lined up, and so on.

A : OK, time is up. Thank you for coming.

Thank you.
