A and B： Hello!
A： Please put your bags on the chair and please sit down.
A： Where do you live?
I live in Fujisawa city in Kanagawa Prefecture.
A： Did you come by train?
Yes I did.
A： How long did it take?
About 1 hour and fifteen minutes.
A： Well, in Japan, I heard there are many superstitions. For example
people attending a funeral sometimes hide their thumbs. What is the reason
for doing that and why are Japanese so superstitious?
What? Hiding thumbs in a funeral? Sorry I didn’t know such a custom
existed in Japan.
A： What is Shinto?
A： Yes. Are there any superstitions regarding funeral?
Well, there is a custom of sprinkling salt after funeral for purification. When I came back from a funeral, my wife sprinkled salt on me for purification.
A： Oh that is interesting.
(Aは”Hiding thumbs”のことを知らないのは不思議だなという表情をしてBを見ていたが、Bは納得の様子。 そこで一段落して次の質問へ。)
A： What do you think about the bird flu?
A： What is “uchiwa”?
“Uchiwa” is a round, flat paper fan with a plastic or wooden handle.
It is used for fanning a fire or keeping oneself cool. (と自分を扇ぐしぐさで。)
A： Thank you very much.
