Good morning.

A,B: Good morning.

B: Please sit down.

Thank you.

B: Please tell us your name.

My name is ….

B: Where do you live?

I live in FuchuCity, a suburb of Tokyo.

A: So I am going to ask you some questions.

Yes.

Do you mean cherry blossom viewing?

A: Yes.

We usually enjoy cherry blossom viewing in March or April.

It depends on the weather, as it is sometimes warm and sometimes cold. But let me say it is usually in April. If you are living in Tokyo, the most popular place for cherry blossom viewing is Ueno park. Many people go there to enjoy cherry blossoms, and it is usually crowded. Many people have picnics under the trees while drinking and singing loudly.

A: Why do they do that?

Because “hanami” is the most popular thing to do for Japanese when ushering in the spring. After the long, cold winter , people like to relax and enjoy spring.

A: Is “hanami” a Japanese custom?

Yes, it has a long history, and I think it started among the nobility and then became prevalent among the common people in the Edo period.

A: Edo period ?

Yes, it’s the period when the samurai ruled the country. It started in the 17th century and lasted for about 260 years. For a long time, except during the period when the government was in Kamakura,Kyoto was the capital of Japan. In the Edo period, the government moved to Tokyo, but before that, Edo was a kind of rural area.

A: You say Kyoto has long been the capital of Japan, and there are many temples …

Yes, it was the capital, so there were many people as well as the nobility, so many temples and shrines were built there.

A: In Kyoto , which temple should I visit ?

I would recommend you visit KiyomizuTemple. It is built out over a cliff and has a wide wooden veranda on very tall pillars which look like scaffolding. From there you can have a nice view of Kyoto.

A: Is it possible to go on a day trip to Kyoto from Tokyo ?

By taking the bullet train, it takes 2 hours from Tokyo to Kyoto, so travel time will be 5 hours. So I think you should stay at least one night in Kyoto so you can enjoy some famous temples and gardens.

A: There aren’t so many people wearing kimonos in Japan today, but why is this?

I think it is very hard to move around when dressed in a kimono. Also, it takes time to put one on.So nowadays, kimonos are not the most suitable clothes to wear for Japanese. However, there are some cheaper kimonos.Kimonos are usually very expensive, so people usually wear them on formal occasions such as New Year’s Day, Coming of Age Day and wedding ceremonies.

B: Thank you very much.

Thank you very much.
