BACK NEXT →

Good morning.

B:I was going to ask your name but you said it first.

A:Please take your seat. Where are you from?

I’m from Toyonaka city, in Osaka, located in the northern part of Osaka.

A:Please tell me about the climate of Japan, any feature?

Japan has four clear-cut seasons with a rainy season between spring and summer. The Japanese climate is influenced by geographical extent, ocean currents, summer and winter monsoons and rugged topography. And since Japan is a long country from north to south,(手で日本の形を示しながら) the Japanese climate varies according to the district very much.

A:What do you think about the climate of this winter?

We have had a mild winter so far, but today, it’s very cold, so I put on a coat for the first time this winter(coatのaを抜かしたと気づく)

A:So you think it’s warm…

Yes, I think this winter is much warmer than usual winters.

A:What’s Shogun?

Shogun played an important role in Japanese history. Shogun is usually translated as “generalissimo”. It was a temporary title given by the emperor to the commander-in-chief of an expeditionary army. Later, it developed into the official title given the emperor to the administrative head of the country(少し間をおいて、12世紀?19世紀を言おうとしたらさえぎられた)

A:Which shogun do you like?

I like Tokugawa Ieyasu best. He is the first shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate, which ruled the whole country for about 250 years. He was a clever politician as well as a brilliant general. He was known for his patience and his sense of justice. After defeating all of his opponents in battle in 1600, he established his military government.

A:Why is he clever?
He is very patient, kept cool and waited for a good opportunity to come. His policy became the saying that “If she doesn't sing, I will wait till she does sing, my dear cuckoo”.

A:Do you wear a kimono?
Unfortunately I do not have any kimonos. However, when I reached 20, I wore a gorgeous long-sleeved kimono(袖をジェスチャーで表す)only once on Coming-of-Age Day.

A:On what occasions do Japanese people wear a kimono?

These days, people wear a kimono on such occasions as wedding ceremonies, Coming-of Age Day, and traditional events including tea ceremonies and flower arrangement exhibitions.

A:Do you have any yukatas?.(と助け船を出してくれた)

Oh, yes, I have some yukatas. Yukata is a light cotton kimono and used for relaxation and as sleeping wear. These days, yukata is very popular among young women. They wear a newly designed colorful yukata at fireworks displays and local festivals in summer.

Thank you. Have a nice day.
