A:Hi! Good afternoon! Please take a seat.
Can I put my coat here?
A:Sure. Go ahead!
B:(私の大きめのビジネスバッグを見て)Wow! You've brought a big bag today!
Well, this is a kind of small trip for me(笑い). Actually, I came from ....
A:No wonder(にこやかに).
B:Did you stay anywhere in .... last night?
No, I didn't. I've just got here this morning. It's not a long trip so much. It takes 3 and half hours by highway bus from my hometown to Tokyo.
A:I see. OK, please tell us your name and where you live.
My name is...... I currently live in .... Prefecture.
B:OK. I'd like to ask you some questions today(非常に聞き取りにくいアクセントで苦戦しましたが、段々馴れて来ました).
Sure.
B:I'm often confused about Japanese religion. It seems to me that many of you worship both Shinto and Buddhism. What's the difference between Shinto and Buddhism?
OK. Shinto is the indigenous religion in Japan. We worship some gods(polytheisticが出て来ず、こんな幼稚な表現に!) and those gods are worshiped at shrines, we call jinja. One special point about Shinto is that it has neither a special founder nor any scripture book such as Bibles in Christianity. Buddhism originally came from India(中国、朝鮮経由で入ってきた事をうっかり忘れていました!). It teaches a way to reach enlightment in our lives and gives us a great influence on the spiritual life of the Japanese people.(ここから鎌倉仏教の説明を始めてしまいました。)Many of current Buddhist ideas were introduced to Japan by 6 great monks in the 13th century after they'd finished their trainings in China. Actually, the original Buddhism came to Japan in the 6th century, but its faith was so difficult that only some social classes such as Imperial family worshiped it. But those 6 monks made its faith much easier for general people to understand.(勢いで一気に話してしまいましたが、表現の間違いを恐れて中学英語レベルで話しています。)
B:(不正確な私の説明を興味深そうにうなずきながら)I see. OK, how about ZEN?
Zen is a part of Buddhism, which was newly introduce to Japan in the 13th century. It emphasizes meditation. Recently, many Japanese people visit some Zen temples to do meditation for their relaxation.(なぜ、瞑想するのか、もっと説明すれば良かったのですが、頭が回りませんでした。)
B:How do the Japanese people use shrines or temples in your daily lives?
You mean, in our ceremonial occasions?
B:Yes.
We usually use shrines for wedding ceremony or New Year's visit and use temples for funeral.
B:Which shrines or temples would you recommend visiting?
We have a lot of temples and shrines. It depends on where you stay, but if you stay in Tokyo, I recommend you visiting Meiji Shrine. I think that is the biggest one in Kanto region.
B:Oh, that one is famous for New Year's visit!
Yes. But you have to stand in a very long line if you want to visit on New Year's Day. Many Japanese want to throw money into the donation box(offertory boxが出て来ず), praying for happy new year. (笑い)In Kansai region, I recommend you visitng Heian Shrine, which is famous site for cherry blossom viewing.
B:How about temples?
(とりあえず浅草寺が浮かんだので)I recommendo you visiting Sensoji Temple , which is located in Asakusa, Tokyo. That area still keeps traditional Japanese houses and shops. You can buy some traditional Japanese items such as the Japanese swords for your souvenirs. Of course, they are not real though.
B: You can't carry those stuffs with you in Japan. Right?
Yes. We have a strict law on the possession of those weapons.(話題がかなり飛ぶ)
B:Oh, I think there is a big temple near Narita Airport.
Yes. There is a temple, named Narita Temple(こんな寺は存在しません。 適当に答えて大失敗!)That is the nearrest and most convenient one if you drop by Narita City.
B:OK! Is that all?(Aの方を見て)
A:Yes.(にこやかにうなずいて)That's all for today.Nice taliking with you.
Nice talking with you.Thank you for your time!
B:Safe return to Nagano with your big bag!(笑い)
Yes, I will. Thank you!(退出)
