Hello(笑顔で)
A:Hello(にっこり)
B:Put your bag there (後方の机を指差しながら)
Thank you(かばんを置き椅子の方へ)
B:Please have a seat.
Thank you(着席)
A,B:Good after noon(Aにっこり)
Good after noon(笑顔)
B:Please tell us your name first.
My name is ....
B:And where do you live?
I live in .... City in western Tokyo.
B:H’m, western Tokyo, do you like .... City?
Well, yes, there's no much places... I mean tourist destinations, but it's quiet and nice place, so I like it.
B:Do you work now?
Well...
B:Do you have a job?
Yes.
B:Do you work everyday?
Well, now...4 times...days a week.
(A/B:頷きながら何か書き込む)
A:(笑顔で)Ok, now I'm going to ask you some questions (suppose I'm a foreign tourist and you are a tour guide、の説明は無かったと思います)
Yes.
A:I've heard that the winter climate is quite harsh in some places of Japan, then please explain the difference of the winter climate between Hokkaido and Okinawa.
Well, Okinawa is located in subtropical zone, so it's warm throughout a year and they don't have snow at all, while Hokkaido is located in subarctic zone and it's very, very cold. They have a lot of snow every year, and it goes about minus 20 degrees Celsius outside.
A:Wow, very cold!
Yes, it's very cold there.
A:I've heard that Okinawa has its own culture. Will you tell me about this?
Well, because Okinawa used to be a foreign country, it has some different cultures from the other parts in Japan. For example, local language is sometimes very difficult to understand for people from the other islands like the main island Honshu, or Hokkaido or Kyushu.
And also they have many historical sites but many of them look different from the ones in the other places.
(首里城、等の具体例を出すべきだったと思います)
A:Wow, sounds interesting!
Very interesting!(でしょ〜って感じでうなずきながら)
A:Ok, I'll ask one more question about history. How was Japan modernized after the Meiji Restoration?
Well, the Meiji Restoration happened mainly because that American people came to Japan and asked to open the ports(countryと言ったかもしれません) to western countries, so at that time, Japan was required to become as strong as Western countries. Then the emphasis was placed on enriching the nation and ...and... establishing(makingだったかもしれません) the strong defence.
A,B:その時期に西洋から伝わった習慣はありましたか?というような内容
Well, yes, for example it was when people started to wear Western style clothes, and also people started to eat meat like beef.
It was forbidden before Meiji.
A:H’m...That’s very interesting!
Yes, interesting(笑顔でうなずきながら)
A:日本語にはいくつか違った種類の文字があると聞いたのですが、それについて説明して下さい、という内容(最初聞き取りづらく、一度"I'm sorry?"と聞き返した気がします)
Oh, well yes, we have three types of letters.
One is Kanji, Chinese character which was introduced from China some thousands years ago(1700年前くらいなのにこの表現は不適切でした), and very complicated(複雑な文字を書いているジェスチャーとともに). And another one is Hiragana which represents the pronunciation, and has round soft shape(丸い感じの字を書いているジェスチャー). And the other one is Katakana which is mainly used for writing foreign words(Bの方を見て確認するように).
B:Do you write coca-cola in hiragana?
No, we use katakana because coca-cola is the name of US company.
B:Do you write computer in both katakana and hiragana?(タイピングのジェスチャーをしながら)
(「コンピューター」とひらがなでも書くのか?という質問だったのですが、コンピューターでひらがなもカタカナも打てるのか?という意味と取り違えてしまい・・・)Yes, it's no problem.
B:Is it no problem to write computer both in katakana and hiragana?
Yes, well...
B:I mean, the word, computer(にこやかに)
Oh, I see!! I'm sorry! No, no we don't use hiragana when we write computer because the word computer is the foreign word from English, we use the word computer because we don't have a Japanese word with the same meaning, so...(外国人に誤解されては大変、とAの方に向かってやや早口で説明)
B:(回答を遮りながら)Alright, then can you use all the kanji?
old?
B:all the kanji
No unfortunately not. There are more than 2000 kanji, and it's difficult to remember all of them. We are taught about 2000 kanji through the education, but there are much more. Especially old ones, some old people still use them, but they are very complicated and most people don't use them any more.
B:Ok, then for the last question, I'll ask you regarding why you want to become a tour guide. Do you like talking and meeting with foreign people?
Yes!(笑顔で)
B:So, you like it.
Yes, of course!! Yes.(笑顔で大きく頷き、次の質問を待っていると)
A,B:Alright, that's all for today.
Alright, thank you very much.
A,B:Thank you.
(一礼して立ち上がり荷物を持つ)
(ドアの方へ進みながらもう一度)Thank you very much.(Bの方は下を向いて書類に記入しておられたのでAの方のみにアイコンタクト)
また、最後の「Why do you want to become a tour guide?」に対しては色々答を用意していたのですが、間髪入れずにDo you like talking to foreign tourist?の内容のことを聞かれたのにかなり意表をつかれてしまい、幾つか質問されるのだろうと思って一瞬待っていたら、これで終了です、と言われてしまいました。今思えばそこから話を膨らませるべきだったのだと思います。あまりにも雰囲気が良かったので終わった直後は合格かな、と思いましたがこうして細かく振り返ってみるとミスだらけでした。残念ですが、自分の弱点が浮き彫りになりとても良い経験になりましたので、来年は必ず合格するよう頑張りたいと思います。〉
