Could I put my bags here?"

Let's get started. Are you ready?

Yes, please.

May I ask your name, please?

My name is ........

Where do you live now?

I live in ........, ........ Ward, ........

How long do you live there?

I have been living there for three years now.

Where do you originally come from?

I used to live in ..., ........ Ward, which is adjacent to ........, where I live now.

I see. So you have been living basically in the same area for a long time.

Yes, I do. I like this area very much.

What do you do?

I am currently working for "Congress Corporation," which is a professional congress organizer. We organize many internatinoal conferences or events. Our clients are mostly the Japanese government.

Do you get to speak Engish, often, then?

During our preparation periods, I do not have so many chances to speak English. We have only one native speaker of English on our staff. On the actural days of coventions, congresses, I can speak English to our invitees and speakers.

Now, let me ask you about history, culture and so on.

Japan has a long history. Which period of Japanese history do you have most interet in?

I am interested in the Heian Period, when the imperial court was in Kyoto.During that time, women used to wear twelve-layers of Kimono. I am very much interested in those Kimoto, especially in their fabrics.

OK, next question. On the very last day of a year, 108 chimes of the temple bell are rung....(なんとおっしゃったか、はっきりと覚えておりません。) Do they have any meanings?

Well, it is believed that there are 108 worldly sins.By ringing the 108 bells on the very last day of a year, people would like to be released....(少し回答につまりました。)

So the people will be relieved on the New Year's Day?

Yes, people will be relieved from those worldy sins on the New Year's Day.

Suppose that you are guiding a group of tourists and taking them to Meiji Shrine. What would you tell them before entering the shrine?

Meiji Shrine enshrines a particular kami.

Kami?

Kami is a Shinto god.Meiji Shrine was built in honor of Emperor Meiji. Before entering the shrine, you will see a big "Torii," which is the gateway to the shrine. It consits of two upright posts which are connected at the top with two horizontal crosspieces.

Why is Emperor Meiji enshrined? What has he done?

Well, he made great achievements in terms of culture as well as sports.....

What do Japanese people do on the New Year's Day as a custom?

People pay a visit to a shrine or temple on the New Year's Day with their family, and pray for a healthy and happy new year.

Do you do the same?

Yes, I pay a visit to a shrine near my parents' home every year.

I have seen some people carrying an arrow-like object at shrines on the New Year's Day. What are they?

They are called "Hamaya" in Japanese.I will check into the exact meaning of Hamaya on the Internet, and will get back to you. Yet, I believe that it is a kind of good luck charm, and people buy them wishing for a good health and a happy new year, and bring it back home, and place it at, for example, an alcove, which is considered to be sacred in a Japanese house.(このあたりでストップウォッチがなりました。)

I see. What do they do with the Hamaya, later on?

They will bring the Hamaya back to the shrine, and thank the god for it.

All right, that's all. Thank you very much.

Thank you very much for your time.Have a pleasant evening!(退出しました。)
