Good afternoon.

Good afternoon.

May I put my bag here?

Yes, please.

Please tell me your name.

My name is ........

Where do you live?

I live in ........ ward, ........

Oh, it's very much in the middle of ........

Yes, it is very convenient.

Are you from there originally?

No. I am originally from ......... It is located in the northeast of ........ It takes about 2 hours from here.

OK. Today, I am going to ask you some questions. You are my tour guide, OK?

Yes, I would be happy to.

It is almost winter. I've heard that there is some famous place in Hokkaido that many Australians visit. Could you tell me a little about the area?

Yes, it is Niseko in Hokkaido, the northernmost part of Japan. Niseko is famous for its great powder snow. Also, there are many courses....how do you say... slopes. So, it is a good place for skiers of varied levels, even if you are a beginner.

Oh, that's good. I am a beginner!

Me too! And, there are a lot of tourists from Australia and New Zealand. So there are facilities that offer bilingual services. So you would feel very comfortable there.(勉強したところがでてホッとした)

That's good! Ok, next question. I hear that there are various dialects in the Japanese language. Tell me something about the dialects.

Yes. In Osaka in the Kansai area, which is in the eastern part of Honshu, we can hear some dialect. When we hear the dialect, we can know quickly where they are from. Actually, I am from Ibaraki and we have a strong accent. When I was yet new in Tokyo, people were able to tell where I was from.

Can you tell me some example?

地元のなまりが思い出せず)It was so long ago when I lived in Ibaraki, so I cannot remember the accent ....

Oh, it is OK. It was so long ago.(笑ってくれたのでホッとした)Well, next question. Why samurai had two swords?

Well, two swords ....(一瞬で考えつつ)Yes, samurai had a long sword and a short sword. The long sword is for killing enemies. The short sword is for hara-kiri.(ジェスチャーを交えて)

Oh! Hara-kiri!

と思いつつも)Yes, let me tell you a little bit about hara-kiri. It is ordered by their master when they did a disgraceful act. But the hara-kiri is a death with dignity. They were rather happy to die that way.

I see. Next question. Throughout Japanese history, there have been many foreigners that have visited and influenced Japan. Can you name one? And tell me something about him or her.

I would say... Douglas MacArthur. He was a General and lived in Japan during the occupation period after WW II, which ended in 1945. He made a lot of efforts in making a new constitution. I've heard that there were arguments between Japan and America. But He tried hard and made Japan a new country. Also, he invited to Japan some foreign experts in some special fields, so that we were able to learn new technologies.

OK! Thank you very much!(え?

Yes, it is finished.

Thank you very much for your time. I enjoyed very much.

Me too.

Have a nice day.

You, too.
