Why did samurai wear two swords?

(よく聞こえなかったので)、Could you repeat the question?

Why did samurai wear two swords?

The longer sword was used to protect himself from enemies. And the shorter one was used to kill himself.(そのようなことを聞いたことがあったような気がして、言い切ってしまった)Harakiri was considered to be more courageous than killed by the enemy. So,when he was defeated in the battle, he killed himself.

Who was the most important foreigner in Japanese history?

Many people say the most important foreigner who visited Japan is Perry (family name が出てこなかった!)

Why?

He visited Japan in the late 19th century. Until then, Japan closed its doors to the Western countries. But he forced Japan to open. Japan was obliged to have treaties with some countries.

Why did Japan close its doors until then?

It was the 3rd Shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate, Iemitsu who closed the country. One of the reasons is to stop the influence of Christianity. After the arrival of Christian missionaries, more and more Japanese were influenced by the Christians. Another reason is to put the foreign trade under the dominance of the Tokugawa shogunate Government. In fact, Japan didn't totally closed its doors. Nagasaki, in the southern part of Japan, was used as the only port for trading with other countries, like Holland and Korea.

Do you have some dialects in Japan?

Yes. Local Japanese speak some dialects. Japan is a country streatching north to south. So there are many dialects.

Do you know some dialect expressions?

Yes, in the Kyoto dialect, they say "Okini" which means "Thank you." It makes you feel warm-hearted.

Do you know any other dialects?

Yes. In the northern part of Japan, Tohoku Area, the winter is very severe. And so people try to save the amount of language.(東北地方では寒さのためにあまりしゃべらない人が多いということを聞いたことを思い出して)Every dialect reflects the feeling of its people. Every dialect makes you feel familiar.(親しみを感じさせるという意味で使った)

So, are there some dialects you don't understand?

Yes. It is sometimes difficult to understand dialects especially when I listen to a dialogue between local people.

O.K. It's finished. You may go now. Thank you.

Thank you.

Thank you very much. I was very glad to talk to you.
