質疑応答

May I come in?

Yes, please.

May I put my baggage here?(後の机をさして)

Yes, of course. And please sit down here.

Thank you, good afternoon.

Good afternoon. It's nice too meet you.

Nice to meet you too. My name is ........ I live in ........ Now I am an instructor, but in the future I want to be a proffesional tour giude, so I'm very happy to be here.

Oh, you are a very lucky person. Then let's go on to the question, supposing that I am a foreign tourist and you are a tour guide.

OK, please go ahead.

In spring, Cherry blossoms are blooming throughout Japan. I wonder why do the Japanese like cherry blossoms so much?

I have three reasons for that. One is that the cherry blossoms are short-lived,,,(ここで緊張してつまってしまい、少しの時間、沈黙)

(こちらをチラっとみて、何か書き留める)

Japanese feel values in short-lived things,,(文法を間違えた!とパニック、、ここはもういい!と次に。。)The second reason is the Japanese feel warm,,,,,(こんな簡単な質問につかえたらもうだめだ!とパニック。ここから開き直る。)The Japanese find the color of the cherry blossoms warm. The third is that we could have a party under the cherry trees, drinking and dancing. Many office workers are looking forward to that.

OK.

OK. Go on to the next question. In winter, many people visit Japan from various countries, such as Austlaria, and often enjoy skiing in Hokkaido. Would you tell me about a famous ski resort in Hokkaido?

Well, Niseko is one of them. It is the major ski resort in Hokkaido. Its powdered snow is famous. So many people visit Hokkaido from all over the world including Australia.

Oh! there are many hot springs in Hokkaido, right?

Yes, One of them is Noboribetu. It is the major nationwide hot spring resort, but I prefer a minor hot spring resort. For example, Jozankei resort, it has quiet, serene, atmosphere.(あまり詳しく説明できなかった。答えを準備していなかったことを反省。)

Thank you.

Please tell me about a foreigner who is famous in Japan.

(オバマが浮かんだが、説明できるか自信がなかったので急遽、変更)Lafcadio Hearn is one of them. He is a famous novelist who made a spiritual and cultural contribution. He loved Japan and naturalized himself, and changed his name into Koizumi Yakumo. He lived in Matsue in Shimane prefecture. I like his famous work "The Japanese mind", and I was very impressed by that. That's why I wanted to become a tour guide. He had transferred Japanese culture to all over the world, which was his great deed.

Oh, I see.

Next question. I've heard there are many dialects in Japan.

Dialect?

"Dialect"

Oh, "Dialect", I understand.

Please tell me about one dialect that you know.

Well, I know a Dialect in Nagoya. It has very gentle, and unique expressions.Especially at the end of the sentence, such as "Dagaya", it sounds a bit uneasy, but I like it all the better for it. It sounds really friendly to me.Actually I am from Nagoya, so I used it by myself as a mother accent.

So do you use it even today?

No, not at all. It was long time ago, so now I hardly remember that. But I still like hearing it very much.

OK, you know another one?

Another example is a dialect in Tohoku. Acrually my father is from Tohoku and often use it. It is too different so, even Japanese people often have difficulty in understanding it.(あまり説明できないことに戸惑う。最後に大阪弁を思いつき、こちらの方が説明することがあったことに気づくが、、)

Good!

Please explain two Japanese traditional swords.

Sword?

Yes, Sword.

Oh, sword, I understand.(思いつかず、相当焦る。日本的事象英文説明300選のページの最後に長刀があったのを思い出し)One is Naginata. It is like a long pole used by women. We try to use it by manipulating it to defence ourselves.

Oh? How about another one?

(もっとメジャーなものは、、と言いたかったが、英語でどう言うかわからず、すかさず、竹刀を思い出す)

Another is Shinai. It is used in Kendo, a traditional Japanese sports. With Shinai, we bump the head, wrist, and body to win the game.(strikeということがば出てこなかっ た)

OK, Thank you. Go on to the last question.

Your tourist has lost a camera on the train. What would you do?

At first, I'll try to make the tourist calm down. And I will say "Don't worry. Japan is a secure country, so it is possible to bring your camera back." Next, I'll call the police and related organization. Anyway, I will do two things at the same time. Make the tourst calm down, and contact related organization such as bus company,,,,,.(電車といわれたことをすっかり忘れていた)

OK, Thank you.

That's all for today.

Thank you. It was nice talking with you.

Me, too. Good luck!

受験の感想

とても雰囲気がよく、メリハリのある調子でテンポ良く質問をしてきてくださいました。現場の環境は、かなり良かったと思います。当然予想される問題ばかりだったにもかかわらず、準備が十分できていない質問をされたことで勉強不足を反省。今、思えば、もっと良い表現をいくらでも学習したのに、使えなかったことにと後悔するばかりです。今回不合格となっても、来年は不足部分を補強し、練習を積み重ねて望みたいと思っております
