Please put your bag there.

On this chair?

I meant that chair, but you can use whichever you like.

Thank you.

What is you name?

My name is .........

Where do you live?

I come from .........

Was it difficult to get here?

Not really. I came here by subway, and it took me less than an hour. Not bad, I think.

Not bad. OK, let’s assume that we are foreign tourists and you are a tour guide. Please relax and enjoy, OK?

All right.(試験官二人とも終始にこやかだったため、特に緊張もせず、リラックスして面接を始めることができた)

What season do you like most?

I would say Spring. In Japan, as you may know, we have four distinct seasons: spring, summer, fall, and winter. Although we have many fun things to do, winter is still cold and gloomy. So when spring finally comes, I get really happy. Cherry blossoms add attraction to spring.(後の質問においてもそうだが、do you recommendではなくdo you like と聞かれたために、通訳ガイドとして答えるという鉄則が頭から消えてしまった。

Speaking of the attraction of spring, what is the attraction of Tokyo?

Do you mean Tokyo's attraction during spring?

Since you have already talked about the attraction of spring, tell us some other attraction about Tokyo.

All right. The attraction of Tokyo is that it is not just a large city. Tokyo is unique in the sense that a wide variety of attractions are available in one city: historical sites, modern sites, cultural sites, nature …. The combination of those is the attraction of Tokyo.(想定していた質問ではなかったため、表層的な回答になってしまった。

OK. Then, where do you like to visit in Tokyo?

In my opinion?

Yes.

新宿御苑ではなく、せめて明治神宮と回答しておきたかった…)Well, there are certainly many attractive places to visit in Tokyo. I recently enjoyed Shinjuku Gyoen, a large park in Shinjyuku.

Yes, sure.

I gave birth to a baby girl in May, so I took her to Shinjuku Gyoen and enjoyed picnicking there. It is easily accessible from my home.

Oh, congratulations!

(ようやく通訳ガイドとして回答していないことにここで気づき巻き返しを図る)Of course, not just myself, I am sure tourists can enjoy Shinjuku Gyoen as well. It has different types of gardens, including a Japanese garden, a French garden and a British garden. These gardens are really attractive.

Yes sure. OK, next. What is haiku?

Haiku is a short Japanese poem, made of 17 syllables. It was developed in the Edo period. It has 5-7-5 pattern. It must contain seasonal words.

Have you ever made a haiku?

Yes, at school.

I thought so! Everybody said no, never. But even I had an experience of making a haiku.

Yes, we learned Haiku at elementary school or junior high school. It does not necessary mean that we are good at making it, but we learned it.

Yes, certainly. Next, what is the attraction of Kamakura?

Kamakura is a popular tourist destination with many shrines and temples. Kamakura was once the seat of a Shogunate government in the Kamakura Period, from the late 12th to13th centuries. In other words, the feudal military government was in Kamakura. Because the government sponsored Buddhism, many temples were built there. Many new sects of Buddhism flourished during this time. Kamakura is also close to the sea. So you can enjoy not only visiting historic sites but also doing outdoor activities. Kamakura, just 50km southwest of Tokyo, is easily accessible from Tokyo.

How about Kawagoe?

Well, certainly Kawagoe is also a nice place to visit, but I personally think Kamakura is better. There are more attractive tourist spots in Kamakura.(ここでタイマーが鳴る。

Why do you want to be a tour guide?

I want to be a professional tour guide largely for two reasons. First, foreigners I have met through traveling, business, and various international programs, showed a keen interest in visiting Japan someday. Just because Japan is too far from most of their home countries, they have never traveled to Japan. Therefore, if they do visit Japan, I want to introduce a good part of Japan and I want them to enjoy their stay to the full through my guiding. This is the first reason. The second reason is related to my daughter. I currently work for a company. A stable job, stable income is nice. But the downside is that long-hour work is imposed on me. I normally leave my office around eight or nine pm, arriving home around nine or ten. I have dinner after that. Since I have a daughter, I don't think this kind of lifestyle is good. If I become a professional tour guide, I can control working hours, thus I can have a good, at least a better balance between the time I work for the company and the time I spend with my family.

Sounds like a good plan. OK, this is it. Thank you for coming today. Have a nice day. Maybe, tomorrow would be good to visit Shinjuku Gyoen with your daughter.

Thank you. I will do so.

What do you recommend?
