Good morning.

Good morning!

Please put your belongings on the chair.(横の椅子を指して)

OK. Thank you.

Could you tell us your name?

My name is .........

Where do you live?

I live in .........

How did you get here?

I got here by train. I took three trains.

How long did it take?

It took me about 75 minutes.

Not bad, right? It is a beautiful day isn't it? OK, let’s suppose we are foreign tourists and you are a tour guide, OK?

Is Japan a large country or a small country?

We usually think Japan is a small country, when we compare it with the U.S. Japan is smaller than the state of California.

What is the population of Japan?

I think the recent population is over 120 million people.

I'm interested in Kabuki. Where can I see Kabuki?

Well, in Tokyo, you can see Kabuki at Kabukiza in Ginza. But it will be closed next April because of its reconstruction project.

Oh, I didn't know that. Why Kabuki is performed only by men?

Well, it is because … Kabuki is originated(isは要りませんね) as "Nembutsu Odori," and a woman(とっさに「出雲の阿国」が思いつきませんでした)started the dance. After the dance spread, the moral(public moralsですよね)declined …, so women’s dance was prohibited. I think it was in Kyoto. Since then, Kabuki has been performed exclusively by men.

OK. There are several World Heritage sites in Japan. Could you tell me about one or two?

Let me explain about Nikko. Nikko is located in Tochigi Prefecture and you can go there by Tohoku Shinkansen, the Bullet train. The Toshogu Shrine is dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder as well as the first shogun of the Tokugawa Shogunate in the Edo period. Toshogu Shrine is characterized by its elaborate carvings.

Is that Toshogu Shrine the only toshogu in Japan?

Well. I think it is the only one.(静岡県など他にも東照宮という名の神社はあるそうですね。 And let me talk about Himeji Castle. The Himeji Castle is located in Hyogo Prefecture, and it is a World Heritage site. It is known as "White Egret Castle" because of its white plastered walls.

What is "Egret" in Japanese?

It is "Sagi," a kind of bird. The castle sits on a hill and it offers a beautiful view from the castle tower.

OK. Recently the government has changed in Japan, right? How was the prime minister elected?

(一応準備していた質問なので、持っている知識を駆使して回答しました)Well, the prime minister was not elected by the general election. He was chosen by the members of the ruling party. He is the leader of the ruling party. In the general election in August, we voted for the party, but the prime minister himself was elected by the Diet members.

What do you think of this change of administration?

I welcome the change.

OK. Why do you want to be a tour guide?

(これは暗記していたのでラッキーな質問でした)I stayed in Belgium for four years because of my husband's job. During my stay there, I had a lot of opportunities to explain my country to my friends and neighbors. It was a lot of fun for me to do that. And at one time we traveled to Greece and took an excursion, and met a tour guide who spoke three languages to guide around the sightseeing places. Her guiding was so good that our travel became unforgettable. Since I already have a tour guide license in Spanish, I want to be like her, a tour guide who speaks two languages and guides with warm hospitality.

I saw a statue of a cat doing like this at some stores. (手招きするジェスチャーをして)What is that?

(これも特訓セミナーで学習済みでした)It is called "Maneki-neko" in Japanese. It is a statue of a cat beckoning passers-by. This gesture means that the cat is beckoning customers, so it is always placed at the entrance of shops and restaurants.

Why is it gold?

Gold? The color?(最初何のことかわからなかったのですが、金色の招き猫のことだとわかり) Oh, money. It brings in money, as well. So, sometimes the color is gold.

OK. Thank you very much. Have a good day.

Thank you. Have a good day!
